ONE NEO-NEGRO
I was born in the Motor City at the beginnings of Motown and there was never
a doubt in my mind that I was American.  I recognized that the social system treated me differently because of my ethnic characteristics, and with that came "labels."
It was “Negro” in the early times.  Then it was a “Black”, and since an “African-American.”  And yes, I was also called a nigger a few times along the way.  In the end, I knew and
drew strength from the truth that I was a good human being that was American by birth,
and I will always draw strength from this.  In 1915, former President Teddy Roosevelt
gave a speech in New York.  In it, he criticized U.S. citizens who identified themselves
by dual nationalities.  He said, "There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism."  Being of like mind, as tomorrow is the first day of the rest of my life,
I renounced all these "assigned" labels.  My skin color is golden-brown, not “Black.”
As for “African-American”; I am native-American born on the soil within the borders.
The only label necessary to identify me is come by naturally by birthright, American.

However, from this day forward, in circumstances where there is some need to
associate me with a label reflecting my ethnic characteristics, I am a Neo-Negro.
Neo-” because I have grown and evolved from the Negro of yesteryear.  Neo- also
represents having embraced a new application of human spirituality that transcends
religion and connects all things.  “Negro” by definition.  This word originated from the Spanish/Portuguese word for “black” and is used in anthropology
to denote those born of the Negroid race of mankind.

When I was young I pledged allegiance to these United States of America.
With my hand over my heart, I remember consciously accepting the responsibilities
associated with being one of the governed in return for the rights and privileges of my American citizenship.  Though my ethnic characteristics have sometimes caused
me to be treated as a second-class citizen, I know my manners, principles, morals,
ethics, and the code of honor to which I adhere have earned me prosperity and respect.
I am committed to the workings of my homeland and it provides me with a relatively
safe place to live and the liberty to pursue a life of happiness.  A part of that commitment requires being a productive individual within the collective to contribute to the workings
of our civilized social system.  I am American and a part of the system until death do us part.
Should circumstances require a label for me because of my ethnic characteristics,
I am one Neo-Negro.
